AmBASSadear tactics page

The Erie Dearie AmBASSaDear is without a doubt one of the most versatile and productive bass lures available to anglers. With the AmBASSaDear you can fish weeds, rocks, open water, anywhere that big bass lurk. Following are some AmBASSaDear tactics.

Shallow Slop
We all know bass love the shallow slop. This could be heavy vegetation, that thick gooey green slime, or mats of weeds that have washed in from constant wave action. Shallow slop provides cover and bass love cover.

The AmBASSaDear is awesome in vegetation. You just cast the twin-spin spinnerbait into the thick weeds and let the lure settle in. The best retrieve in thick slop is a slow, steady retrieve. When you get hung up on a weed, don't try to rip the lure free, just put some pressure on the rod tip and the lure will often pop loose from the snag and keep running. This erratic action will also trigger a bite so be ready when that AmBASSaDear pops free.

For the green slime cast to the edges. The bass often hover under this thick mat of goo and when they see the flash of the two tiny blades they instantly come out to investigate. The action of the skirt or twister tail on the AmBASSaDear's body will often trigger a strike. Let the lure touch down on the bottom, raise the rod tip about a foot, and then let the lure settle back to the bottom. If a fish doesn't hit, slowly retrieve the lure and cast to another edge of the big mat of slime.

It's amazing how the AmBASSaDear will slither around through suspended vegetation and come out clean. You won't find a crankbait that will do this. Cast the AmBASSaDear into a mat of floating vegetation and start a slow, steady retrieve. If you feel a little extra weight from a hitchhiking piece of weed drop the rod tip and give it a little snap. The vegetation will pop off the lure and you'll be fishing productively again.

Rock Pile
The AmBASSaDear is deadly on rock piles because you can count the lure down. You have circled the rocks and know the depth. Maybe you have dropped some marker buoys or are using a GPS to mark coordinates.

Position the boat and make your cast. Count the lure down to just above the top of the rocks. One second for each foot of water. When the lure reaches the right depth twitch the rod tip and begin to slowly reel the lure back. It works better if you have a lighter tip on your rod. With the lighter tip and the twitching you get an action that is too hard for a bass to resist.

Be prepared. When a bass smacks an AmBASSaDear being twitched over the rocks you can bet you're going to feel it.

Weedy Flat
One of the great things about the AmBASSaDear is the ability to cover a lot of water with this lure. It makes it a great option on those big weedy flats where schools of bass roam looking for and easy meal.

The perfect program consists of nothing more than a cast and reel presentation. The AmBASSaDear has the weight you need to get it out a ways. After casting let the lure sink down until it is just over the tops of the weeds or right in the top layer of vegetation. The AmBASSaDear sinks at one foot per second.

The objective when fishing big weedy flats is to cover as much ground as possible to find schools of hungry bass. The angler's biggest mistake is they keep moving even after they hook a fish. Toss out a marker or lock in a coordinate on the GPS and work that area hard. More often than not you will discover many more fish where you hooked that first one. Try a few different speeds and actions to the retrieve triggering strikes from all the remaining fish in the area before moving again.

Weedline
Anglers know a weedline is going to be productive, they just don't fish it in a way to take advantage of that productivity. A weedline should always be fished by casting parallel to it and straining all the depths. You can do that with an AmBASSaDear.

Instead of boating up to the edge of the weeds, ripping the rig out of the rod locker and beating the water around the boat into a froth, set up a weedline strategy.

First you should slowly move along the edge of the weedline setting up a plot line on the GPS or tossing out some markers. You need to know how that edge is shaped.

Then you position the boat so you can cast the AmBASSaDear parallel to the vegetation. If the weedline is very erratic you will use short casts. With a long straight weed edge you can cast a country mile.

On the first cast let the lure sink to the bottom. Experiment with both steady and erratic retrieves. Keep the lure near the bottom for the majority of the retrieve. The next cast count the lure down so it's a couple of feet off the bottom. Work the lure back to the boat at that depth. Each time you cast position the lure a little higher until you have strained that portion of the weedline. Then move the boat so you are working some new water.

As you can see the AmBASSaDear is perfect for this type of fishing because it allows you to work many different depths using many styles of retrieves. A truly versatile lure that catches fish.

Open-Water Bass
In the last few years anglers have discovered those suspended fish they see on their sonars are big open-water bass. They also know that if a lure can be placed in front of these fish they will bite. That's where an Erie Dearie AmBASSaDear is the perfect piece to have on the end of the line.

Typically suspended bass are much deeper than a crankbait can reach and a jig or spoon is hard to get to the right depth with any accuracy. With the AmBASSaDear you can count the lure down to the right depth and know it is right in front of those bass.

The thing to remember is to keep the lure about a foot above the fish. Some experimenting has proven that big suspended bass like to move up to hit an erratic bait that's quivering by.

Let's say you have spotted some bass on the sonar suspended in 24 feet of water over 35 feet. You mark the fish with a buoy or punch in a coordinate on the GPS. Position the boat so you can cast the lure about 15 feet past the fish. Let the AmBASSaDear sink for 22 to 23 seconds and start retrieving the lure right through the fish. Experiment with some different retrieve actions to discover what it is that will trigger a bite.

See how easy this lure is when it comes to suspended fish. You can put the AmBASSaDear right in front of the fish every time. You won't be playing any guessing games.

These are just a few of the ways an AmBASSaDear can be used to fish the circumstances anglers face every day on the water. Without a doubt there are many more conditions and presentations available to anglers. The great part about this is everyone who loves to fish and who incorporates the AmBASSaDear into their program will get to research and discover what works best on their waters, on their bass. What a wonderful reason to go fishing. Have fun on the water and always be sure to send us your stories and photos about the big ones that didn't get away.
